Freegeeking in Vancouver

I’ve been envious of Portland’s FreeGeek for a while now. We still don’t have a comparable program here in Victoria, but at least there’s one starting up a bit closer to home: Tyee article on Freegeek Vancouver.

Good for them – and this counts as an Ubuntu sighting too – guess which Linux distro they send their refurb boxen out with?

Thunder & Lightning…

METAR CYYJ 040600Z 29011G16KT 30SM FEW040CB BKN110 OVC150 19/09 A2991
RMK CB1AC6AC2 OCNL LTNG NE SLP128=

A METAR is an Aviation Routine Meteorological Report; CYYJ is Victoria International Airport; 0600Z is 2300PDT (11 PM local time); the “FEW040CB” means cumulonimbus (CB) thunderclouds at 4,000ft above ground level; 19/09 is temp (in C) and dewpoint; and later in this thing, in the RMK (Remarks) section, we have “OCNL LTNG NE” – Occasional Lightning NorthEast.

We managed to have a real ‘hear thunder, see lightning’ storm this evening, not violent but an actual thunderstorm – and those are incredibly rare here… and at 11pm it’s still 19C… too damn hot!

Abbotsford & Vancouver got even more action – the reports from those two airports are full of LTNG VC – Lightning in the Vicinity of the aerodrome – and even bigger CBs (thunderclouds) than we got.

And it’s too blasted warm & muggy to sleep…
